FAQ

Welcome to the Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ page). Below, we have tried to answer the most common questions visitors to this our web site may have. If you find that your question is not answered on this page, please e-mail us at doug@packerfencing.com or call us at 817-788-4873

Q. Why put in an electric opener on your gate?

A. Wrought iron driveway gates add greatly to the looks of the property, but are a nuisance to open manually, especially during inclement weather.

Q.   Which is better, AC or DC?

A.   While neither is necessarily “better,” both have positives and negatives. AC openers must have an electrical outlet installed at the control box, which will increase the cost, and won’t work during electrical outages.  DC openers need no electrical outlet, recharging with solar panels, and will continue to work during power outages.   DC openers are the most popular due to the cost difference.

Q.   Which brand is best?

A.   The best opener is the one that delivers the best performance for the price. We use the “Patriot” model, made by USA Automatic, for swing gates. For slide gates we prefer the “Apollo.”

Q.   How long will it take to get my gate opener installed or repaired?

A.   Our usual response time is within 2-3 days.

Q.   How do I know you won’t just take my money and run like I’ve heard that some contractors do?

A.   At Packer Fencing, we don’t ask for payment until the job is completed and would discourage you from using contractors that do.

Q.   What kind of warranty do you have?

A.   We have a one year warranty on our work.  Our batteries carry a 1-year full replacement and a second year pro-rated warranty.  Opener warranties vary but as an example, the “Patriot” unit has a 5 year warranty on its printed circuit board, the best in the industry, with a 1-year warranty on the mechanical parts.

Q.     I had another company tell me that I needed a new opener, but I would like another opinion.

A.   While it is possible to need a new opener, it is NOT likely. In almost all cases some component of the opener has failed and needs repair or replacement, but NOT the entire system.  We always strive to keep your costs down, while ensuring that your opener is fixed correctly.

Q.   What is the average life of a battery and solar panel on a DC opener?

A.   Batteries generally last 2-4 years depending on usage and solar panels are good for approximately 7-9 years.

Q.     What is the typical charge for repairing an opener?

A.   We charge a $120 service call plus parts and materials.
